Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Celebrates the 10th IFMBE Latin American Summer School on Emerging Technologies for Healthy Aging
This landmark edition commemorated not only ten years of academic impact but also ten years of continuous leadership by Professor Martha Zequera, whose vision, dedication, and commitment have guided the Summer School since its foundation. Under her academic leadership, the initiative has evolved into one of Latin America's premier international educational programs in biomedical engineering, digital health, and healthcare innovation. Throughout the past decade, the Summer School has created a vibrant ecosystem connecting universities, scientific societies, healthcare institutions, industry, entrepreneurs, government organizations, and students to develop innovative solutions that improve people's quality of life through technology.
Over five intensive days, the Summer School brought together internationally recognized experts, students, researchers, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore how emerging technologies can transform healthcare systems and promote healthy and independent aging. More than an academic event, the program served as an international platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, innovation, and capacity building.
The 2026 edition welcomed 32 students from Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, El Salvador, Panama, and Costa Rica, who participated in an immersive educational experience alongside 55 national and international speakers. Together, they addressed some of today's most pressing healthcare challenges through engineering, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, clinical innovation, and digital transformation.
A Truly Global Academic Experience
One of the defining characteristics of the Summer School was its outstanding international participation.
The academic program featured 12 IFMBE Distinguished Lecturers, together with internationally recognized experts from the United States, Croatia, Poland, Chinese Taipei, Peru, Costa Rica, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia. Additional keynote lectures were delivered virtually by distinguished professors from Australia, Africa, and Singapore, further reinforcing the truly global character of the program.
The opening ceremony brought together authorities from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, representatives of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), the Regional Council of Biomedical Engineering for Latin America (CORAL), academic institutions, healthcare organizations, scientific societies, and industry partners, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in advancing biomedical engineering and healthcare technologies.
Designing the Future of Digital Health
The Summer School was specifically designed to strengthen collaboration among engineering, health sciences, social sciences, business, and industry while promoting the development of integrated healthcare services supported by next-generation technologies.
Participants explored how emerging technologies—including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, wearable medical devices, assistive robotics, Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), telemedicine, interoperable digital platforms, smart sensors, digital twins, and digital health ecosystems—are transforming healthcare delivery for older adults.
Special attention was given to the challenges associated with chronic disease management, frailty, fall prevention, medication adherence, cognitive decline, mobility limitations, remote patient monitoring, and independent living.
Rather than focusing exclusively on technology, the program emphasized a human-centered vision of healthcare, recognizing older adults within their physical, cognitive, emotional, social, cultural, and environmental contexts. Participants discussed how engineering solutions must be ethical, inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to real societal needs.
The Human Person at the Center of Innovation
One of the most memorable and inspiring moments of the Summer School was the keynote lecture "The Value of the Human Person," delivered by Dr. Myriam Graciela Díaz and Dr. Carlos Julio Zequera.
Far beyond a conventional academic presentation, the lecture became the philosophical cornerstone of the entire Summer School. It invited participants to reflect on the intrinsic dignity of every human being and on the ethical responsibility of designing technologies that genuinely serve people. The speakers emphasized that technological innovation should never be an end in itself, but rather a means to enhance human well-being, preserve dignity, foster autonomy, and promote social inclusion.
The presentation profoundly impacted students, faculty members, invited speakers, and international participants. Throughout the week, the concept of the value of the human person became the guiding principle behind many discussions, workshops, and collaborative activities.
Its influence extended directly into the Innovation Challenge Hackathon, where multidisciplinary teams incorporated this human-centered philosophy into the development of their healthcare solutions. Rather than focusing solely on technical performance, students integrated ethical, emotional, social, and cultural dimensions into their proposals. Significantly, the winning projects reflected this vision, demonstrating how technological innovation can be successfully combined with respect for human dignity to create more compassionate, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare solutions.

Hands-on activities took place at the Clinical Simulation Center of the Schools of Medicine and Nursing and within the state-of-the-art laboratories of the Faculty of Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, where students interacted directly with advanced medical technologies provided by industry partners.
Innovation Challenge and International Mentorship
One of the highlights of the Summer School was the Innovation Challenge Hackathon, during which multidisciplinary and multicultural teams collaborated to develop innovative healthcare solutions addressing the needs of older adults.
Participants received personalized mentoring from internationally recognized experts specializing in biomedical engineering, healthcare innovation, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, service design, business development, technology transfer, and clinical engineering.
The resulting proposals integrated technological innovation with ethical responsibility, sustainability, accessibility, usability, and patient-centered care, demonstrating the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex healthcare challenges.

Under the framework of Digital Health 4.0, participants explored advanced topics including:
